February has been quite an adventure for Poor Man’s Whiskey. We found ourselves once again on the wild northwest Oregon trail through Bend and Eugene and then on up to Lake Tahoe, California drinking whiskey with the Truckee ski bums. The best and last part of it all was getting to play on stage at Sugar Bowl ski area with one of our idols!! Keep on reading to find out who this may be.
Bend, Oregon home of the 4 Peaks Music Festival, has always been real good to us. We played at the Old Stone church to a packed house of old friends and new fans. Opening the show were Bend locals, the Moon Mountain Ramblers. They set us up with the perfect vibe to lay it down PMW style. The church was rocking and the beer was flowing. Old friend and 4 Peaks chairman Eric Walton joined us for a tune on electric guitar and threw down some serious Mojo.
Eugene: Early the next morning we hit the icy road on down to Eugene for a radio show with the U of O host Rev. Mark Time. After some R and R and a little exploration of the town we headed to the stage for a triple set at the Eugene Micro Brew fest. Later that night we had an impromptu jam session at the all night Mexican restaurant Burrito Boy. The place was cracking and Rovetti made some new young lady fans that left an impression on him (sharpie any one?), while the Jameson whiskey left an impression on Josh, Eli, and Aspen. A good time was had by all and we look forward to getting back to Eugene as soon as possible. Big thanks to Diana for the great job on sound!
Next up: Tahoe! Yee Haw!! The PMW crew was out at Sugar Bowl all of President’s day weekend trying their best to tear down the mountain. We were victims of some serious wipeouts that brought us back to the bar to heal our wounds. Fiddle player Chris Rovetti proves to snowboard almost as fast as he can play that fiddle.
LOOoooK OoooooUT!!!
Friday night we had our premier at downtown Truckee’s Bar of America. The place was packed and the ski bums were ready to party. It was great to see and ski with old friends, and to meet some new ones. Eli and Josh busted out the 1970’s downhill speed suits for the last set showing those Truckee locals that it really does make them play faster. Big shout to all you Truckee fans for showing up to represent, that place was packed! Thanks also to Ed Flores for all his help and running the sound, you the man! After continued debauchery at the hotel, lasting into the wee hours of the morning led by the charge of PMW house acupuncturist Truckee Tracey, we headed to the Sugar Bowl lodge for the staff party.
The Road Goes On Forever and The Party Never Ends!!:
Question: What happens when you mix a group of lift operators, ski patrols, snow cat drivers, groomers, bartenders, ski instructors, snowboard instructors, Ryan and James from 4 Year Bender with beer and Poor Man’s Whiskey?
Answer: a serious PARTY!!!
The Sugar Bowl lodge was lit up PMW Hoe Down style with an eclectic mix of back flips, head banging, break dancing and Salsa moves on the dance floor. (I think I even saw the Macarena!)
It was here that we were graced by the presence of one of PMW’s longtime idols and influences Robert Earl Keen! The Texas country rock n roll troubadour was in town and wanted to see what the Poor Man’s Whiskey was all about. He joined us on stage for his anthem storytelling number “The Road Goes On Forever and The Party Never Ends.” We were truly stoked to have this opportunity to play with one of our nations most sincere and real deal songwriters alive today. We also had a blast playing with Ryan Smith and James Riddle from 4 Year Bender. These guys tore it up on guitar and keys respectively, making the night a real treat for us. Big shout out to Sugar Bowl for letting PMW make this gig an annual tradition. You take such good care of us, we can’t thank you enough. We are already looking forward to next year!
For the next couple of weeks we will be taking short rest from the road. You can find us hiding out in the wine caves at Bella Vineyards for two consecutive weekends March 1-2 and March 8-9 for their annual barrel tasting event. Come hibernate and drink with us in the cave for what’s left of winter. After that we are back on the road heading south to Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara. But don’t worry, we’ll be back again to rock out with yawl at the Mystic Theatre on March 29th with another great band from Washington called Flowmotion. See ya all soon!
