Yabadaba Doo...it's cold!!!

this was one of my most memorable gigs of the year. we were hired to play a pray for snow party near halloween time for the ski crew up in truckee. naturally because of it's proximity to halloween we assumed everybody was dressing up. we decided to all go as the flintstones. eli came as captain caveman, myself wilma, tony as fred, chris as betty, and i can't quite remember which character josh came as.

to really pull off the costumes we basically had sleeveless dresses on. here was the problem. when we were told we were playing in truckee near november i assumed it would be indoors. it wasn't. now i spent the fourth of july camping in truckee and the nightime was cold as heck in the middle of summer. now it was approaching winter and we were playing outdoors in skimpy outfits. that's downright crazy!

the gig was a lot of fun. we started off playing electrified in front of a large screen showing slides and video clips, reminiscent of early pink floyd. as the night went on we gravitated to an all acoustic set much closer to the bonfire. a good call since i thought this pray for snow party was actually going to work. it was definitely plenty cold enough. the band kept itself warm by the best way it knows how. whiskey. whiskey. and more whiskey! it was my first introduction to the now infamous ski shot.

this led to the my favorite pmw highlight of the whole year. as i was packing up the gear ( about 25 yards from the bonfire) i look up to see josh trying to jump over this huge mountain of flames. somewhere on his take off he trips over tony's bass and he and the bass go crashing into the middle of the bonfire. now he is lying back down in the flames, arms and legs flailing about trying to get up as tony's bass lay like a giant log in the flames. he manages to bounce up and get the bass out while declaring "i'll pay for it, i'll pay for it" like a frightened child who knows he's going to get spanked. somehow both josh and the bass survived with little damage. i drove home the next day with a big smile and chuckle all the way back to warm sonoma county.
